Our research

Our research group’s blueprint is guided by the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to secure a sustainable, peaceful, prosperous and equitable life on earth for everyone now, and in the future. In particular, our research contributes to objectives 9 (Industry, innovation and infrastructure), 11 (Sustainable cities and resilient communities), and 16 ( Peace, justice and strong institutions).

We perform fundamental and applicable research covering all aspects of data, information and knowledge management, and artificial intelligence (AI). This includes big data analytics and management, machine learning, deep learning, computer vision, natural language processing, data security and privacy. Our group brings together expertise in the aforementioned areas and targets its application in a variety of research and innovation projects that require ICT enabling technological convergence.

We work with a wide range of application domains, including public safety, social cybersecurity, disaster response and resilience, transport, mobility, energy and agriculture. Our research work is cross-disciplinary, collaborating with domain experts within and outside Norway, and based on innovative methodologies  and with society at large.

One of our new focus areas is resilience in complex systems: Our current work investigates the intersection of online violence and the  resilience of communities. We are interested in the mechanisms that allow such systems to adapt to overcome  different types of emergencies, both natural and man-made.

Our current research focus at a glance

  • Design and implementation of remote sensing for monitoring marine life and vegetation, utilizing state-of-the-art computer vision algorithms. Our work is further enhanced with domain knowledge to discern patterns in image data, working in synergy with underwater remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) to offer a comprehensive analysis.

  • Utilizing machine learning techniques (AI tools) to predict streamflow for hydropower generation.

  • Design new data-driven AI methods and tools for crop monitoring in fruit production.

  • Human-AI teamwork to support cybersecurity resilience, maintaining preparedness, awareness, and detection within critical infrastructures despite uncertainty and change.

  • Evaluating the fitness of AI models compared to the real world to create resilient systems.

  • Design and develop technological solutions and robust AI models for early identification of malicious behaviors online  as well as supporting social mitigation by pushing counter narratives to hate. .

  • Design and development of data-driven AI solutions to elucidate the interactions between climate change and food safety. Focusing on development of new data-driven AI models to understand these interactions.

  • Study of the relationship between malicious human behaviour and the resilience of a  community.

  • Explore novel AI methods for exploiting the multimodal content to detect diverse malicious social behaviours that could easily get viral across the language boundaries of geography and culture, presenting a greater risk to the local communities across multiple geographical areas.

  • Leveraging state of the art emerging technologies (e.g. artificial intelligence, big data, edge computing, internet of things) to optimise multimodal mobility network and traffic management.

  • Harnessing the potential of big data and AI to stimulate innovation for more sustainable mobility behaviour patterns, while also protecting citizen privacy.

  • Study and analyse big data in the transport domain in particular with respect to five transport dimensions: mode, sector, technology, policy and evaluation.

We also have extensive experience in requirements elicitation, specification, analysis and management; design and execution of empirical studies (case studies, action research); validation of innovative solutions through large scale demonstrations, pilots or testing of use cases in a real setting. We offer cross-industry expertise, technological and socio-economic insight, and commitment to sustainable solutions.

In parallel, our research also addresses prominent issues around privacy, data protection and ethics, in order to apply big data to solve challenging problems for society. We support international, national and regional collaboration and knowledge transfer in this field.
